Bing recently knocked at your consultation room, and was humbled to receive your stimulation of my dullness and blockage, so that I suddenly had an awakening. Reflecting on myself, my faculties and consciousness are dim and blunt, and all the learning and understanding of my life fell entirely into emotional views; choosing and rejecting, I was like someone clad in tattered wadding walking through brambles, only tangling myself up. Now with a single smile I am suddenly released, with joy beyond measure; had the great lineage master not condescended with such compassionate skill, how could this have come about? Since arriving in the city, wearing clothes and eating meals, holding my sons and playing with my grandsons, every single thing remains as before; having lost the feeling of attachment, I also do not form thoughts of anything extraordinary. The rest of my habitual tendencies and old hindrances have also grown somewhat lighter; your earnest parting words, I dare not forget. Reflecting again, I have only just managed to enter the gate, but the Great Dharma is not yet clear, and in responding to conditions and encountering things, when contacting affairs I am not yet able to be unobstructed. I further hope you will raise and instruct me, so that I may ultimately arrive somewhere and perhaps not bring disgrace to your Dharma assembly.
