Respectfully I contemplate that you dwell at ease in an araṇya, gathering in one place with that venerable one, disporting in the ocean of Vairocana's treasury, performing buddha-affairs as appropriate, with little sickness and few afflictions; may your activities and rests be blessed with myriad fortunes. From antiquity, all the sages have been like this; therefore, in thought after thought, they enter the cessation samādhi of all phenomena, not retrogressing from the bodhisattva path, not abandoning bodhisattva deeds, not forsaking the mind of great loving-kindness and compassion, cultivating the pāramitās without ever resting, contemplating all buddha lands without weariness, not forsaking the vow to deliver sentient beings, uninterruptedly turning the wheel of the Dharma, not abandoning the task of teaching and transforming sentient beings, and even fulfilling all supreme vows, fully knowing the distinctions of all lands, entering the buddha lineage, and arriving at the other shore: this is the domestic affair that a great hero enjoys in the four deportments. As you, great lay practitioner, vigorously practice this without weariness, Miaoxi likewise plays the role of a man of Puzhou here. Furthermore, I wonder: do you still permit an outsider to put in a hand? Hearing that upon reaching Changsha you closed your mouth like Vimalakīrti at Vaiśālī and deeply entered non-duality, this is also nothing outside your measure, for the Dharma is just so. I hope that the lay practitioner will enjoy it in this way; then all demons and non-Buddhists will certainly come to be good spirits protecting the Dharma. As for the other various differing doctrines, they are all the realm of your own mind's direct perception, not something else. I wonder what the lay practitioner thinks of this?
