Ascending the hall, he cited: "A monk asked Zhaozhou, 'What is the path that does not go astray?' Zhaozhou said, 'Recognizing the mind and seeing one's nature is the path that does not go astray.'" The Master said: "A stick hits a stone man's head—crack! It discusses real facts; there is no need to understand it as Chan, there is no need to understand it as the Way. If you want the path that does not go astray, you must recognize the mind and see your nature before you can attain it. And which is the mind that is recognized? Which is the nature that is seen? Some hear it spoken like this and immediately say, 'Wherever there is water, it holds the moon; no mountain does not carry clouds.' Such an understanding is truly leaving Zhengzhou through the Cao Gate."
