Ascending the hall, a monk asked: "Yangshan said: 'Spiritual penetrations and playful roaming are not lacking in the venerable one, but the Buddha Dharma must be left to the old monk.' I wonder, on what principle did he rely?" The Master said: "He only knows how to open his mouth and laugh, not realizing his tongue is long." The monk continued: "If so, then today he is laughed at by the Venerable." The Master said: "Why raise your voice to stop an echo?" The monk continued: "Spiritual penetrations and playful roaming are not lacking in the venerable one, but the Buddha Dharma must be left to Jingshan." The Master said: "Do you still see Jingshan?" The monk continued: "Do not show off so much." The Master said: "Having eyes is like being blind." He then said: "Yangshan clearly did not understand spiritual penetrations and playful roaming; the arhat clearly did not know the subtle essentials of the Buddha Dharma. Although they did not know each other, each lacked nothing. Since nothing was lacking, the long is the long dharmakāya, the short is the short dharmakāya, the round is the round dharmakāya, the square is the square dharmakāya. If you awaken in this way, only then will you know that the long is not long, the short is not short, the round is not round, and the square is not square. Since all are not, what then do you call the dharmakāya?" He gave a shout and said: "Almost like prolonging imprisonment to increase wisdom."
