Ascending the hall, [the Master] cited: "At the end of the summer, Master Dongshan instructed the assembly, saying: 'At the beginning of autumn and the end of summer, brothers, go east or go west, but you must go straight to the place where there is not an inch of grass for ten thousand miles.' Those who gave turning phrases before and after failed to tally with it. A monk carried these words to Shishuang. Shishuang said: 'Why didn't you say: "As soon as you step out the gate, there is grass"?' When Dongshan heard of this, he deeply affirmed it, declaring that an ancient buddha had appeared in Liuyang."
The Master said: "'Ten thousand miles without an inch of grass'—just please go on like that; 'As soon as you step out the gate, there is grass'—each has its official tally. With an official tally, what restraint is there? / The person waiting by the tree stump under the moon in the clear breeze— / The cool hare gets farther away, and the spring grass turns green."
