Ascending the hall, [the Master] cited: "A monk asked Zhaozhou: 'I have newly entered the monastery; I beg the master for instruction.' Zhaozhou said: 'Have you eaten your porridge yet?' The monk said: 'I have eaten my porridge.' Zhaozhou said: 'Go wash your bowl.' The monk had an awakening at these words."
The Master said: "Across the various quarters there has been much taking up and handling [of this case], and no few footnotes have been added to it, yet not a single person has ever clearly broken it open. Today Miaoxi will clearly break it open for you all: once you have eaten your porridge, then wash your bowl! Tell me: was there ever an instruction or not? Black beans have always been good for making paste; a bhikṣuṇī is definitely a nun!"
