Instructing the assembly, [the Master] said: "'Dharma after dharma is originally the dharma; there is no dharma and no non-dharma. How within a single dharma can there be dharma and non-dharma?'" Holding up his staff, he said, "This is the staff—which is the original dharma?" He also said, "This is the original dharma—which is the staff? Right now, is there anyone who can resolve this? If you can resolve it, not only will you have your own path to break out, you will also not be deceived by others. If you cannot resolve it, Yunmen will talk your ear off: opening the mouth is an immediate loss, closing the mouth is no defeat—just so, just so." He then struck once and said, "One hammer blow, both fulfilled." He held it up again and said, "Look! Hanshan and Shide are sweeping the ground; turning the broom handle upside down, they strike the bare pillar once, jumping right up to Tuṣita Heaven, poking open the nostrils of the deva in the heaven of neither-perception-nor-non-perception. Vairocana Tathāgata, unable to bear the pain, runs into Yunmen's staff to hide himself. Yunmen's whole assembly roars with laughter, saying: 'How utterly irrelevant!' Right at such a time, the bare pillar and the lantern paint their eyebrows—how much more splendor is added!" After a pause he said, "When there is spirit, add spirit; where there is no charm, there is still charm."
