Requested by Cai Chunqing to instruct the assembly on the occasion of making offerings for his late father, he brought up [the following]: "Luopu instructed the assembly, saying, 'Sun Bin has closed his shop; let a diviner come forward.' Thereupon a monk stepped forward and said, 'Please cast a divination for me, Master.' Luopu said, 'Your father has died.' The monk was speechless. Fayan clapped his hands three times in his place." The Master said, "This monk had the misfortune of his father dying, and on top of that had someone else clapping hands at him. One truly knows that misfortunes never come alone, and blessings never arrive in pairs. Nevertheless, Luopu was good at divining, and Fayan was good at interpreting; yet if one considers it carefully, regarding the auspices of the lines and images, both old fellows blundered together. Since he had drawn the Fire-Wind Cauldron hexagram (Ding), why did he interpret it as Earth-Fire Brightness Hidden (Mingyi)? Yunmen is not so." Suddenly taking up his staff, he said, "Under Sun Bin's door, the old man has died." Striking three times consecutively, he said, "Do you understand? Internally it belongs to the Gen palace; seek again the external image." Again striking three times, he said, "Thousand spirits and myriad sages, myriad sages and thousand spirits—do not follow human sentiments." Striking once more, he said, "Auspicious and inauspicious are displayed on the hexagram."
