師因讀洞山悟道頌，遂疑云：「有箇渠，又有箇我，成什麼禪。」遂請益湛堂，堂云：「爾更舉看。」師遂舉，堂云：「爾舉也未會。」便推出。

Because the Master read Dongshan's verse on awakening, he became doubtful, thinking: 'There is a "he" and there is a "me"—what kind of Chan is that?' He then asked Zhantang for instruction. Zhantang said: 'Recite it again and let me see.' The Master recited it, and Zhantang said: 'In your very reciting of it you have not understood.' Then he pushed him out.
