師云：「山僧待人志誠，須是資質是始得。此是一超直入如來地，參禪須是直心直行，直言直語，心言直故，始終地位中間，永無諸委曲相。祖師西來，直指人心見性成佛，僧問雲門：『如何是佛？』門云：『乾屎橛。』擬議思量已曲了也，何況脫空耶？」

The Master said: 'I treat people with utmost sincerity, but their natural capacity must be right to begin with. This is a single leap straight into the Tathāgata-ground; in investigating Chan, one must have a straightforward mind and straightforward practice, straightforward words and straightforward speech. Because the mind and words are straightforward, from beginning to end and throughout intermediate stages, there are never any devious appearances. When the ancestral master came from the west, he pointed directly to the human mind to see into one's nature and attain buddhahood. A monk asked Yunmen: "What is Buddha?" Yunmen said: "A dry shit-stick." To hesitate and deliberate is already crooked, let alone deceptive fabrication!'
