因無礙請師讚法海真，乃曰：「上江老宿，大段笑下江，雲門下却不笑覺印，蓋他曾見保寧勇、真淨輩來，兼圓通曾見舜老夫、浮山遠，所以較別，如大小本、夫鐵脚輩，皆可笑也。蓋法海嗣覺印，印嗣圓通，其辭曰：『廓圓通門，續雲門派，燕坐胡床，虎視百怪，佩毘盧印，摧伏魔外，一句當陽，電光非快，不動道場，而入三昧，贊之毀之，俱遭白癩。』夫是之謂法海老人，能於一毫端，而遊戲無邊之法界。圓通甞在端和尚處作首座，受四面請，其時演和尚在海會作磨頭，遂交代作首座。圓通遷棲賢，而演和尚交代住持四面也。端和尚甞頌古有一句云：『日出東方夜落西。』圓通改夜字作定字，端笑而從之。」

Because Wu'ai requested the Master to write a eulogy for the portrait of Fahai, the Master said: 'The senior masters of the Upper River largely mock those of the Lower River, yet those in the Yunmen lineage do not mock Jueyin. This is because he had met the likes of Baoning Yong and Zhenjing, and moreover Yuantong had met Old Fu of Yunju and Fushan Yuan, so his caliber was different; whereas figures like Big and Little Ben and Husband Iron-Foot are all laughable. For Fahai was the successor to Jueyin, and Jueyin was the successor to Yuantong.' The eulogy read: 'Opening wide the Yuantong gate, / Continuing the Yunmen line; / Sitting calmly on the folding chair, / Looking around like a tiger at the hundred prodigies; / Wearing the seal of Vairocana, / Subduing demons and non-Buddhists; / One phrase directly manifest, / Lightning is not as swift; / Without stirring from the place of enlightenment, / Entering samādhi. / Praising it or disparaging it, / Both incur white leprosy.' Such is what is called Old Man Fahai, who can disport in the boundless Dharma realm on the tip of a single hair. Yuantong once served as head monk under Master Duan and received an invitation to Simian; at that time, Master Wuzu Yan was serving as mill master at Haihui and took over to serve as head monk. When Yuantong moved to Qixian, Master Yan took over the abbacy of Simian. Master Duan once composed a verse on an ancient case containing the phrase: 'The sun rises in the east and falls in the west at night.' Yuantong changed the character 'night' to 'fixedly', and Duan smiled and accepted it.
