師因入室退閑坐，忽云：「今時兄弟，知見情解多，須要記閑言長語來這裏答，大似手中握無價摩尼寶珠，被人問爾手中是什麼？却放下拈起一箇土塊，可殺癡。若恁麼，參到驢年也不省。」

The Master, having retired from entering the room to sit at leisure, suddenly said, "Nowadays the brethren have much views and intellectual understanding. They must memorize idle words and long phrases to come here and answer, much like holding a priceless maṇi jewel in hand, and when someone asks what is in your hand, you put it down and pick up a clod of earth—what sheer stupidity! If you act like this, even if you investigate until the year of the donkey, you will still not realize it."
