師一日云：「我平生好罵人，因看玄沙語錄，大喜他勘靈雲，道『諦當甚諦當，敢保老兄未徹在。』可謂壁立萬仞。後來與靈雲說話了，却云：『爾恁麼方始是徹，後頭却恁麼撒屎撒尿。』」却問圓悟如何？悟笑云：「他後頭却恁麼地，我也理會不得。」遂下來歸到寮，方知玄沙大段作怪，遂舉似圓悟，悟笑云：「且喜爾知。」晦堂云：「今時諸方，多是無此藥頭。」師云：「切忌外人聞此麁言。」

The Master said one day: "All my life I have liked scolding people. Reading the Recorded Sayings of Xuansha, I was greatly pleased by his examining Lingyun, saying, 'Sure, very sure, but I dare say you, elder brother, have not yet penetrated through.' This can be called standing like a cliff of ten thousand fathoms. Later, after speaking with Lingyun, he instead said, 'Only when you are like this are you penetrated through, but afterwards you shed excrement and urine like this.'" He then asked Yuanwu how it was. Yuanwu smiled and said, "Afterwards he was like that—I cannot understand it either." He then went down and returned to his dormitory, and only then did he know that Xuansha was playing major tricks; he then reported it to Yuanwu. Yuanwu smiled and said, "I am glad you know." Huitang said, "Nowadays in all quarters, most lack this medicine base." The Master said, "By all means do not let outsiders hear these crude words."
