師因見老宿上堂云：「我在老師會中，得箇末後句，不免布施大眾。」良久云：「不與萬法為侶者，是什麼人？待汝一口吸盡西江水，即向汝道。」便下座，師云：「山僧即不然，我在老師會中得箇末後句，不免舉似大眾。」便下座。

Because the Master saw a senior monk ascend the hall and say, "When I was in my late master's assembly, I attained the final phrase; I cannot but bestow it on the great assembly"—and after a long pause saying, "Who is the one that does not take the myriad dharmas as companions? Wait until you swallow the West River in a single gulp, then I will tell you"—and then stepped down from the seat, the Master said, "This mountain monk is not so: when I was in my late master's assembly, I attained the final phrase; I cannot but present it to the great assembly"—and then stepped down from the seat.
