Librarian Ziqing was a native of Shu who was famous in the monastic groves. He had extensively studied under such great elders as Zhenru, Huitang, and Pujue. Traveling through Mount Lu and entering the capital, he met Chan Master Fayun Yuantong. Walking together with Great Master Xiu to Fayun, Xiu was permitted to enter the hall and conveyed Librarian Qing's reputation to Yuantong. Tong said, "Let him register for quarters elsewhere for the time being; wait until a place is vacant here, and then he will be permitted to enter the hall." While at Zhihai, Qing happened to fall ill in bed. Xiu wished to go inquire about his illness, but there was no leave granted by the monastery, so he secretly slipped out of Zhihai to visit Qing. Qing sent a letter reporting to Yuantong that Xiu was violating regulations by going in and out. Yuantong learned of this from the letter, and at the night informal gathering he scolded severely: "This is truly a petty man! Out of moral duty, that man risked expulsion from the monastery to inquire about your illness; in return, you lodged an accusation against him. Is this what an upright person or gentleman does?" Hearing of this, Qing stopped breathing. The monastic groves all said that Qing died from Yuantong's single scolding.
