1.25

舜老夫一日舉：「鹽官和尚喚侍者：『將犀牛扇子來。』侍者云：『扇子已破。』官云：『扇子既破，還我犀牛兒來。』侍者無對。」舜云：「三伏當時正須扇子，為侍者不了事。雖然如是，鹽官太絮，何不大家割捨？侍者當時若見鹽官道扇子既破還我犀牛兒來，便向道：『已颺在搕𢶍堆上了也。』」

One day the old fellow Shun cited: 'Reverend Yanguan called to his attendant: "Bring the rhinoceros fan." The attendant said: "The fan is already broken." Yanguan said: "Since the fan is broken, give me back the rhinoceros." The attendant had no reply.' Shun said: 'During the dog days of summer, a fan was truly needed right then; it was because the attendant did not bring the matter to completion. Even though it was like this, Yanguan was too wordy; why didn't everyone let it go? If the attendant back then had seen Yanguan say, "Since the fan is broken, give me back the rhinoceros," he should have said to him: "It has already been tossed onto the garbage heap!"'
