五祖會中有僧名法𨴯，入室次，祖問：「不與萬法為侶者，是什麼人？」僧云：「法𨴯，即不然。」祖以手指云：「住住！法𨴯即不然作麼生？」𨴯於言下有省。後至東林宣祕度和尚室中，盡得平實之旨。𨴯一日持一枝花，遶禪床一匝，背手插於香爐上曰：「和尚且道，意作麼生？」宣祕累下語，𨴯不諾，經兩月日遂問𨴯曰：「爾試說看。」𨴯曰：「某甲秖將花插香爐上，是和尚自疑，別有什麼事？」

In the assembly of Wuzu there was a monk named Fahuo. When he entered the room, Wuzu asked: 'Who is the one who does not keep company with the ten thousand dharmas?' The monk said: 'For Fahuo, that is not so.' Wuzu pointed his finger and said: 'Stop, stop! How is it that for Fahuo it is not so?' Huo experienced awakening under these words. Later he reached the room of Reverend Xuanmi Du at Donglin and obtained the full import of plainness and solidity. One day Huo held a flower, circled the meditation bed once, placed it behind his back into the incense burner, and said: 'May the Reverend say: what was the intention?' Xuanmi repeatedly offered words, but Huo did not accept them. After two months, [Xuanmi] then asked Huo: 'Try to speak of it.' Huo said: 'I only put a flower into the incense burner; it was the Reverend who doubted himself—what other affair was there?'
