圜悟和尚初在溈山，一日真如和尚問曰：「如何？」悟云：「起滅不停。」如曰：「可知是博地凡夫，老僧三十年在裏許，秖得箇相似。」次見晦堂，堂曰：「我住院十二年不會，如今方會，脚尖頭也踢出箇佛。」悟後住昭覺，有長老問：「劉鐵磨到溈山問答，并雪竇御街行頌，未審此意如何？」悟曰：「老僧更參四十年，也不到雪竇處。」長老歎曰：「昭覺和尚猶如此說，況餘人耶。」

When Master Yuanwu was initially at Mount Gui, one day Master Zhenru asked him, "How is it?" Wu said, "Arising and ceasing without stop." Ru said, "One can tell you are an ordinary mortal bound to the earth! This old monk has spent thirty years inside it, and only obtained a resemblance." Next he saw Huitang; Tang said, "For twelve years I resided in a monastery and did not understand; only now do I understand—even with the tip of my toe I can kick out a buddha." Later, when Wu resided at Zhaojue, an elder asked, "Regarding Liu Tiemo's dialogue upon coming to Mount Gui, and Xuedou's verse to the Imperial Street Walk, I wonder what the meaning of this is?" Wu said, "Even if this old monk investigates for another forty years, I would still not reach Xuedou's place." The elder sighed, "Even Master Zhaojue speaks like this, how much more so others!"
