舜老夫，一日問秀圓通：「聞爾見懷和尚是否？」秀云：「是。」舜云：「有何言句？」秀云：「有投機頌曰：『一二三四五六七，萬仞峯前獨足立，奪得驪龍頷下珠，一言勘破維摩詰。』」舜云：「不好，別有什麼言句？」秀云：「一日有長老來參，懷舉拂子云：『會麼？』長老云：『不會。』懷云：『耳朵兩片皮，牙齒一具骨。』」舜歎云：「真善知識。」從此服膺。

One day Old Shun asked Xiu Yuantong, "I hear that you met Master Huai; is that so?" Xiu said, "It is so." Shun said, "What words were there?" Xiu said, "There was an awakening verse: 'One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, / Standing on one foot before a ten-thousand-fathom cliff; / Snatching the pearl beneath the black dragon's chin, / In a single word, seeing right through Vimalakīrti.'" Shun said, "No good. What other words were there?" Xiu said, "One day an elder came to study. Huai raised his whisk and said, 'Do you understand?' The elder said, 'I do not understand.' Huai said, 'Ears are two flaps of skin; teeth are a set of bones.'" Shun sighed, "A true good spiritual friend!" From then on he took it to heart with deep respect.
