Head Monk Qingsu was a native of Min who stayed with Ciming for thirteen years. At the age of eighty he lodged at Luxuan in Lake Xiang, never having begun to socialize with others, so that no one knew him. By chance he lived as a neighbor to Head Monk Yue, a man from Chuzhou. When Yue was eating honey-preserved lychees, Su passed by the doorway. Yue called out, "These are fruits from your venerable home region; we can share them." Su said, "Since my late teacher passed away, I have not had this food for a long time." Yue asked, "Who was your late teacher?" Su said, "Ciming." Yue was filled with doubt and astonishment, and thereupon gave him some leftover fruit. Gradually becoming closer to him, Su later asked, "Whom have you seen?" Yue said, "Master Wen of Dongshan." He also asked, "Whom did Wen see?" Yue said, "Master Nan." Su said, "Flat-headed Nan did not see my late teacher for long, yet afterwards his way of the Dharma flourished greatly like this." Yue marveled at him all the more. One day, carrying incense, he went to Su and bowed in homage. Su shunned him, saying, "Because of my meager merit, my late teacher gave me a prophecy of enlightenment that forbade me from instructing others." Thereupon, after more than a month had passed, pitying Yue's sincerity, he said, "Try telling me what you have understood throughout your life, and let me see." Yue recounted in full what he had seen. Su said, "You are able to enter the buddhas, but unable to enter the māras." He also said, "Only at the final turning word does one arrive at the iron barrier." After half a year like this, Su finally gave him seal of approval, and moreover admonished him, saying, "What Wen showed you were all correct views and understanding. Although I have pointed out the truth for you so that you may enjoy functional ease, I fear that leaving your master too early will prevent you from exhausting his way. In the future, by no means become my heir." Later, when he assumed the abbacy, he succeeded Zhenjing; this was Doushuai Yue.
