In the assembly of Master Dayu Zhi, there was a monk who recited the Diamond Sūtra one hundred times a day. When Zhi heard of this, he had an attendant invite him over and asked, "I hear that you recite the Diamond Sūtra one hundred times a day; is this so?" The monk said, "It is so." Zhi said, "Have you ever investigated the meaning of the sūtra?" The monk said, "I have not." Zhi said, "You need only recite it once a day and investigate the Buddha's meaning. If you awaken under a single phrase, it will be like drinking a single drop of seawater and knowing the flavor of a hundred rivers." The monk followed his instruction. One day, reciting to the passage 'One should know thus, see thus, believe and understand thus, without giving rise to dharmic characteristics,' he suddenly had an awakening and thereupon reported it to Zhi. Zhi immediately pointed to a dog in front of his bed and said, "What about the dog?" The monk was speechless. Zhi then beat him out.
