師在雲居作首座，一日到西積莊，遇一暫到，從圓通來，云：「因看首座頌女子出定話，有箇悟處，特來求首座印證。」師云：「儞去，不是。」僧云：「某甲未說見處，為什麼道不是？」師再三搖手云：「爾去，不是不是。」僧懡㦬而退。圓悟一日到首座寮，因說：「密印長老四年前，見他恁麼地，乃至來金山陞座，也秖恁麼地，打一箇回合了，又打一箇回合，秖管無收殺，如何為得人？恰如載一車寶劍相似，將一柄出了，又將一柄出，秖要般盡。若是本分手段，拈得一柄便殺人去，那裏秖管將出來弄？」時有僧聞得，謂師曰：「某前日因看他小參語錄，便知此人，平日做得細膩工夫，所以對眾秖管要吐盡，一段了又一段不肯休。」師曰：「事不如此。如龍得半盞水，便能興雲吐霧降霔大雨，那裏秖管去大海裏輥，謂我有許多水也。又如會相殺人，持一條鏘，纔見賊馬，便知那箇定是我底，近前一鏘殺了賊，跳上馬背便殺人去。須是恁麼始得。」

When the Master was the head monk at Yunju, one day he went to Xiji Manor and encountered a transient guest monk who had come from Yuantong. The monk said, "Because of reading the head monk's verse on the woman emerging from samādhi, I had an awakening, and I have come especially to seek the head monk's confirmation." The Master said, "Go away, it is not so." The monk said, "I have not yet stated what I have seen; why do you say it is not so?" The Master waved his hand repeatedly and said, "Go away, it is not so, it is not so." The monk retreated in shame. One day Yuanwu came to the head monk's quarters and said in conversation, "Four years ago I saw Elder Miyin act like this, and even up to his coming to Jinshan to ascend the seat, he was still just like this: after finishing one round, he would fight another round, merely lacking a concluding resolution. How can he help people? He is just like a cart loaded with precious swords: having taken one out, he takes another out, only wanting to unload them all. If it were the method of the fundamental duty, upon picking up a single blade one would go and kill people; how could one just keep bringing them out to show off?" At that time a monk who heard this said to the Master, "The other day, because I was reading his informal gathering records, I knew that this person usually does refined and meticulous work; therefore, facing the assembly, he only wants to spit it all out, refusing to stop after one section followed by another." The Master said, "The matter is not like this. It is like a dragon that, having obtained half a cup of water, can stir up clouds, breathe out mist, and pour down torrential rain. How could it merely keep rolling around in the great ocean, claiming, 'I have so much water'? It is also like someone who knows how to kill an enemy: holding a single spear, as soon as he sees the bandit's horse, he immediately knows which one must be his; stepping forward, he kills the bandit with a single spear thrust, leaps onto the horse's back, and goes on killing people. Only when it is like this will it do."
