長蘆福長老，道眼不明，常將所得施利，往上江齋僧。圓通秀禪師聞之，往驗其虛實，適至見福上堂云：「入荒田不揀，可殺顢頇，信手拈來草，猶較些子。」便下座，秀大驚曰：「說禪如此，誰道不會。」乃謂：「諸方生滅。」遂躬造方丈禮謁，具說前事，仍請益提唱之語。福依文解義，秀曰：「若如此，諸方不謾道，爾不會禪。」福不肯，秀曰：「請打鐘集眾，有法秀上座在此，與和尚理會。」福休去。

Senior Monk Fu of Changlu lacked clear eyes of the Way. He often took the offerings and donations he received and went up the river to feed monks. When Chan Master Yuantong Xiu heard of this, he went to test his reality. Arriving just then, he saw Fu ascending the hall and saying, “Entering an overgrown field without choosing is utterly careless and muddled; yet picking up whatever weed comes to hand is still somewhat better.” Then he stepped down from the seat. Xiu was greatly astonished and said, “Speaking Chan like this—who says he does not understand?” He then remarked, “The various quarters are full of arising and ceasing.” He therefore went in person to the abbot’s quarters to pay homage, recounted the earlier matter in detail, and furthermore asked for instruction on the words he had raised. Fu explained the meaning according to the letter. Xiu said, “If it is like this, the various quarters were not deceiving when they said you do not understand Chan.” Fu would not admit it. Xiu said, “Please strike the bell to assemble the crowd; Elder Faxiu is here to settle it with the Venerable.” Fu let the matter drop.
