和州開聖覺老，初參長蘆夫鐵脚，久無所得，聞東山五祖法道，徑造席下。一日室中垂問云：「釋迦彌勒猶是他奴，且道：他是阿誰？」覺云：「胡張三，黑李四。」祖然其語。時圓悟和尚為座元，祖舉此語似之，悟云：「好則好，恐未實，不可放過，更於語下搜看。」次日入室垂問如前，覺云：「昨日向和尚道了。」祖云：「道什麼？」覺云：「胡張三，黑李四。」祖云：「不是不是。」覺云：「和尚為甚昨日道是？」祖云：「昨日是，今日不是。」覺於言下大悟。覺後出世住開聖，見長蘆法席大盛，乃嗣夫，不原所得，拈香時忽覺胸前如擣，遂於痛處發癰成竅，以乳香作餅塞之，久而不愈竟卒。

Elder Jue of Kaisheng in Hezhou initially studied under Changlu Fu Ironfoot, but went for a long time without gaining anything. Hearing of the Dharma teachings of Dongshan Wuzu, he went directly to his seat. One day in the room, Wuzu set down the question, “Śākyamuni and Maitreya are still his slaves; tell me, who is he?” Jue said, “Bearded Zhang the Third, dark Li the Fourth.” Wuzu affirmed his words. At that time, Master Yuanwu was the head seat; Wuzu related these words to him. Yuanwu said, “Good though it may be, I fear it is not yet solid; you must not let him off, but probe further beneath the words.” The next day, when Jue entered the room, Wuzu set down the question as before. Jue said, “I told the Venerable yesterday.” Wuzu said, “What did you say?” Jue said, “Bearded Zhang the Third, dark Li the Fourth.” Wuzu said, “Wrong, wrong!” Jue said, “Why did the Venerable say it was right yesterday?” Wuzu said, “Yesterday it was right, today it is wrong.” Under these words, Jue had a great awakening. Later, when Jue assumed abbacy to reside at Kaisheng, seeing that Changlu’s Dharma assembly was flourishing greatly, he claimed Fu as his predecessor, not tracing back his true attainment. When he offered incense, he suddenly felt as if his chest were being pounded; an ulcer formed an opening at the painful spot. He plugged it with frankincense cakes, but it did not heal for a long time, and he finally died.
