1.97

師云：「今時兄弟，參佛果底，不肯見佛眼，見佛眼底，不肯參佛果，譬如眾盲摸象，豈知二老之意耶？殊不知，佛眼便是有規矩底佛果，佛果便是無規矩底佛眼。若是要為人不瞎人眼，却來見佛果，若秖見佛眼，涅槃堂禪，自救即得，為人即不得。老南會下得底兄弟，便指教見真點胸，蓋手段苦辣，為人自別也。」

The Master said: "Brethren nowadays who study under Foguo are unwilling to see Foyan; those who see Foyan are unwilling to study under Foguo. This is like the blind men feeling the elephant—how could they understand the intention of these two venerable elders? Little do they realize that Foyan is simply Foguo with rules, and Foguo is simply Foyan without rules. If you want to guide others without blinding people's eyes, then come and see Foguo. If you only see Foyan, that is Chan of the hall of nirvāṇa; you can save yourself with it, but you cannot guide others. Brethren who achieved realization in the assembly of Old Nan were directed by him to see Zhen Dianxiong, because his methods were bitter and pungent, and his way of guiding people was quite distinct."
