Ascending the hall, he cited: "Venerable Cha of Tong'an said, 'A magpie cries in the cold juniper; the mind-seal is transmitted by him.' A monk said, 'Why must it be so?' Cha said, 'There is someone in the assembly.' The monk said, 'Under the gate of Tong'an, the path is cut off and people are desolated.' Cha said, 'A barbarian drinks milk and turns around to blame the good physician.' The monk said, 'Stop, stop.' Cha said, 'An old crane enters a dried pond and sees no traces of fish.'" The Master said: "Striking the strings to distinguish the tune, there is singing and there is responding. The higher the song, the steeper the harmony. Though the sounds of Zheng and Wei are mixed in between, every beat of the five tones and six pitches is the command."
