On the tenth day of the fifth month in the fourth year of the Chunxi era, in respectful obedience to an imperial decree, the hall was opened at the Jingde Lingyin Chan Monastery. The Emperor dispatched an imperial envoy to confer imperial incense. The Master expressed gratitude for the imperial favour, held up the incense, showed it to the assembly, and said: "Personally sealed with the imperial insignia, bestowed by the Sovereign—it is not worldly frankincense, nor is it sandalwood from beyond the seas. Brought forth, its value outweighs the Sahā world; where it burns, it brings good omens and auspiciousness. May it illuminate the Buddha-sun, reverently praise the imperial realm, cause the mountains, rivers, and the great earth to give rise to joyful minds, and cause all wriggling and crawling sentient beings to be universally perfumed with right view."
