Establishing an assembly, he ascended the hall and said: "A thousand peaks brew elegance, ten thousand trees return to spring; the Arhat Assembly arises, penetrating past and present. First, we pray that the dragon kings confer blessings and protection, so that the auspicious snow quickly clears; second, we pray that donors take refuge and revere, arriving in multitudes like converging spokes; third, we pray that the great assembly be of one heart and one virtue to support the monastic grove, dripping water turning to ice, consistent from beginning to end. This mountain monk once had these words: 'A single hand does not clap alone; many hands make a clapping sound. Flung wide open, the gates of the three essentials and three mysteries may well serve as standard and rule for humans and devas.' Speaking thus in former days, bringing it up thus today—this too is hard to forget where one is well accustomed." He further cited: "Venerable Sixin addressed the assembly, saying: 'Where there is one person, you must go; where there is half a person, you must go; where there is no person, you must also go in person.'" The master said: "Venerable Sixin had both advanced years and virtue; he did not utter words in vain. Like refined gold from a great smelting furnace, smelted a thousand times and refined ten thousand times to become gold that wraps around a finger, only then cut and trimmed with nothing wasted. Even so, after all, where does the meaning return? Once the single arrow at the three borders accomplishes its merit, why worry that the four seas will not be at peace?"
