The death notice of Remonstrator Shi having arrived, he ascended the hall and said: "When the wind moves, the grass bends; when water arrives, the channel forms. Trusting one's feet to come thus, clouds disperse and fog rolls back, everywhere is spring; trusting one's feet to go thus, the sky is clear and the sea serene, object and self are as one. Therefore it is said: 'Going and coming are not by forms; movement and stillness are not by mind.' Being thus, in every dust mote and every kṣetra authority and power are universally displayed; capping color and riding sound, not a fine speck of dust is established. In nets and cages one refuses to stay; when called, one does not turn one's head; ancient sages made no arrangements, down to the present leaving no tracks. Tell me, where is Remonstrator Lord Shi right now?" After a long pause, he said: "The yellow millet dream has just broken; in the land of India, a single flower blossoms." He further spoke a verse: "In years past we met and spoke of the ultimate truth; / today ascending the hall, I talk of going and coming. / A single thought, vast and open, without facing toward or turning away; / in the spring light, the iron tree blossoms of itself."
