Entering the monastery, he ascended the hall. A monk asked: "Beside the Heshi Cliff, the monastery has been revived after five hundred years; before Vulture Peak, the gong'an of two thousand years ago is renewed. Not asking about holding up the flower and subtly smiling, what about when the correct command is fully raised?"
The Master said: "Pervading all heaven and covering the earth."
The monk continued: "A brand-new sun and moon, extraordinary heaven and earth."
The monk said: "Again, I have the elder's repeated testimony."
The monk continued: "Relying on the Master's single drop of Caoxi water, scattering it to become the spring of the imperial court."
The Master said: "What about the matter beneath your heels?"
The monk continued: "Just now I came directly from the monks' hall."
The Master said: "In the end, what is it?"
The monk continued: "Zha!"
The Master said: "A fabricated Chan monk."
The Master then said: "On the peak of the solitary summit, gazing at the clouds and skies is not yet the ultimate; at the crossroads, mixing with mud and wallowing in water appears even more entangled. Not treading either of the two paths, there is another single road of living vitality. Like a dragon getting to water, like a tiger relying on a mountain, holding shut the essential crossing, letting neither ordinary nor sage pass—this still falls into the contemporary people's realm of rising and falling. Now you sit and stand dignified, seeing and hearing unconfused; each person possesses a spirit that surges to the heavens, and everyone holds a flawless pearl. Arriving here, how do you send communication? How do you apply it? Therefore it is said: 'These dharmas abide in their dharma-positions; worldly marks are permanently abiding.' When like this, mountains, rivers, and the great earth do not obstruct the eyesight; the four sages and six ordinary beings serve mutually as host and companion. Sitting, one sees sounds harmonizing and echoes according, ten thousand dharmas without deviation. Raising one to understand three, discerning subtleties at a glance, horizontally covering and vertically encompassing, releasing and seizing according to the occasion. And tell me, how do you express the phrase of arriving home? Leaning at times on the meditation cushion, there is no other business; the eternal day is quiet and tranquil, congratulating the era of peace."
