Returning from leaving the countryside, he ascended the hall: “Going out holding the bowl, coming back holding the bowl, / The straps of the straw sandals snap, conveying the message, / Exquisite in all eight directions, shining completely. / Wandering through the demon's palace, entering the tiger's lair, / Encountering an obstinate adversary at the turning point of the pivot, / Causing the mind-ground to rest immediately. / And relying on what principle is it just like this? The old do not take physical strength as their capability.” He also cited: “Chan Master Huanglong Nan addressed the assembly: ‘There are five things that are not easy: first, the one who solicits alms has it not easy; second, the donor has it not easy; third, the one who transforms the raw into cooked has it not easy; fourth, the one who sits upright and eats has it not easy. What kind of person is the one with yet another not-easy thing?’ After a long silence, he said: ‘Shh!’ and descended from the seat. At that time, Zhen Dianxiong was serving as head monk. The director of the canon asked him: ‘Just now the venerable master spoke of five things that are not easy—what kind of person was that?’ The head monk said: ‘When you see his cheekbones from behind his head, do not associate with him.’“ The master said: “One hand does not clap alone; two hands clap loudly together. Opening wide the three essentials and three mysteries, crushing to powder the standards of Buddhas and patriarchs. Village songs and community dances arouse people's disgust, surpassing by far the daylight-robber of bygone days.”
