Ascending the hall, [the Master] said, "If there is a single phrase, when it reaches you all, your tongues are cut off. If there is not a single phrase, when it reaches you all, you are left completely free to [lie] horizontal in threes and vertical in fours. Not getting involved in the two paths, even the Buddha's eye finds it difficult to peer into. When meeting on a narrow path, holding the whip and turning the head back—I do not ask you all about that. But what about when Zhaozhou arrived at Zhuyu, gently leaned his staff [against the wall], and immediately walked out—what was the meaning of that?"
Giving a shout, he said, "Where Yu's strength did not reach, the sound of the Yellow River flows west."
