In the first month of the eleventh year of the Chunxi reign era, while at the hermitage of Prefect Yuan in Pingjiang, [the Master] accepted an invitation. Ascending the hall, after reciting the verse composed on the day the late Ying'an accepted the invitation to Tiantong, he said, "This mountain monk also has a verse to cite for the great assembly:
'Last year during the eighth month,
I received the decree allowing peace and leisure.
Shaking out my cloud-and-water nature,
I strolled over to Mount Yang.
The sons and brothers of the Yuan household
Joyfully exerted themselves to seek my company.
Residing in the hermitage for three months,
Opening the mind, the universe is vast.
Suddenly I received a letter from Siming,
The words in the letter lingered with concern.
Tiantong's Dharma seat was vacant;
The Prefect's words were earnest and upright.
Sending a special envoy across the distance,
Not asking whether traveling the road was hard,
This mountain monk, nearing his twilight years,
Dares not deceive himself.
Beating the drum, I am happy to go;
The four assemblies are also delighted.
That which my late teacher left unfinished
Surely will raise billowing waves.'
I venture to ask the great assembly: What was it that my late teacher left unfinished? Taking a drink of water and choking each time—Linji and Deshan both blush with shame."
