Ascending the hall, he cited: "A monk asked Liangshan, 'When the house thief is difficult to guard against, how is it?' Liangshan said, 'If you recognize him, it is not an injustice.' The monk asked, 'What after recognizing him?' Liangshan said, 'Banish him to the land of the unborn.' The monk said, 'Could that be the place where he establishes his life?' Liangshan said, 'Dead water does not harbor dragons.' The monk asked, 'What is a dragon of living water?' Liangshan said, 'It raises clouds without spouting mist.' The monk said, 'What if it suddenly tilts the lake and topples the mountains?' Liangshan got down from his rope-chair, seized him, and said, 'Just do not wet the corner of this old monk's kāṣāya!'"
The master called to the assembly and said, "Old thief Liangshan's compassion was far too excessive: he passed a ladder to the thief and led him into the house. Having plundered all the family wealth and stirred up a ruckus, he did not know how to sever his life-root, causing the stealing mind not to die. As for Wuju, it would not be so. If someone suddenly asked, 'When the house thief is difficult to guard against, how is it?' I would immediately cut him in two with one stroke, letting him be a completely free-and-easy sneak-thief, everywhere raiding camps and plundering fortresses." Suddenly taking up his staff, he said, "This band of thieves—what are they looking for coming here?" He descended from the seat and drove them away all at once.
