1.33

上堂，舉：「金峯和尚示眾云：『老僧二十年前有老婆心，二十年後無老婆心。』時有僧出問：『如何是和尚二十年前有老婆心？』峯云：『問凡答凡，問聖答聖。』僧云：『如何是二十年後無老婆心？』峯云：『問凡不答凡，問聖不答聖。』」師云：「烏巨當時若見，但冷笑兩聲，這老漢忽若瞥地，自然不墮聖凡窠臼。」

Ascending the hall, he cited: "Venerable Jinfeng addressed the assembly, saying: 'Twenty years ago, this old monk had the mind of an old grandmother; twenty years later, I have no mind of an old grandmother.' At the time, a monk stepped forward and asked: 'What was the Venerable's mind of an old grandmother twenty years ago?' Feng said: 'When asked about the ordinary, I answered with the ordinary; when asked about the sacred, I answered with the sacred.' The monk said: 'What is having no mind of an old grandmother twenty years later?' Feng said: 'When asked about the ordinary, I do not answer with the ordinary; when asked about the sacred, I do not answer with the sacred.'" The Master said: "Had Wuju seen it at that moment, he would merely have chuckled twice. If this old fellow had suddenly had a flash of insight, he naturally would not have fallen into the ruts of sacred and ordinary."
