1.49

上堂，舉：「藥山久不上堂，寺主白云：『大眾久思和尚示誨。』山云：『打鍾著。』寺主打鍾，大眾雲集，山便歸方丈。主隨後白云：『和尚許為眾說話，何故一言不措？』山云：『經有經師，論有論師，又爭怪得老僧？』後來翠巖芝和尚云：『寺主怪藥山不為眾說話，可謂誤他三軍。』」師云：「翠巖只具一隻眼。殊不知，藥山歸方丈，便是老他三軍。」

Ascending the hall, he cited: "Yaoshan had not ascended the hall for a long time. The monastery director reported: 'The great assembly has long yearned for the Venerable's instruction.' Yaoshan said: 'Ring the bell.' The director rang the bell, and the great assembly gathered like clouds. Yaoshan then returned to the abbot's quarters. The director followed him and reported: 'The Venerable agreed to speak to the assembly; why did you not utter a single word?' Yaoshan said: 'For sūtras there are sūtra masters; for treatises there are treatise masters; how can you blame this old monk?' Later, Venerable Cuiyan Zhi said: 'The director blamed Yaoshan for not speaking to the assembly; it can be said he misled his three armies.'" The Master said: "Cuiyan had only a single eye. Little did he realize that Yaoshan's returning to the abbot's quarters was precisely wearing out his three armies."
