On the winter solstice, upon entering the new monks' quarters, he ascended the hall: "Heaven does not speak, yet the four seasons proceed; earth does not speak, yet the myriad things are born; the sage does not speak, yet with folded robes and clasped hands the myriad kingdoms come to pay court; the patch-robed monk does not speak, yet he turns ominous stars into auspicious luminaries and pinches the great earth into a saṅghārāma. Cutting the long to patch the short, abolishing the old to establish the new, one then sees eight-sided lucidity and a precipitous quarter, cutting off the streams and mountains, encompassing the wind and moon. Now, what is the phrase upon entering the gate? After the single yang returns, the auspicious vapor rises of its own accord."
