At a donor's request for posthumous merits, the Master ascended the hall: "Before the Buddhas appeared in the world and before Bodhidharma came from the west, everyone embraced the uncarved jade of Mount Jing, and each bore the pearl of the Red River. When the five petals unfolded and a thousand lamps continued the flame, birth and death were seen to alternate, and cold and heat to succeed each other. In the wealthy mansions of the northern quarter, yesterday's singing turns to today's weeping. Jiangshan's announcement like this is much like 'moving flowers, butterflies also arrive; buying stones, clouds are plentiful.' If you all examine this well, you are guaranteed all day long to sit and lie atop sounds and forms, yet sounds and forms cannot defile you; all day long you will emerge and submerge within the realm of birth and death, yet birth and death cannot envelope you. But based on what principle can one be like this?" Suddenly holding up his staff, he said: "Where have the thousand sages gone? The long sword leaning against the sky threatens with its chill."
