入方丈，據座云：「此室甚深廣大，非語默可及。淨名居士向遮裏寐語未惺；七佛祖師到來納敗愈甚。傑上座口似乞兒破席袋，又如何施設？」喝一喝云：「不入洪波裏，爭見弄潮人？」

Entering the abbot's quarters, he took the seat and said: "This room is profound, vast, and great, beyond the reach of speech and silence. Layman Vimalakīrti talked in his sleep here without awakening; when the ancestral masters of the seven Buddhas arrived here, their blunders were even worse. Senior Monk Jie's mouth is like a beggar's torn mat sack—how then can he make any display?" He gave a shout and said, "If one does not plunge into the billowing waves, how can one see the master of the tides?"
