復舉：「三聖道：『我逢人則出，出則不為人。』興化道：『我逢人則不出，出則便為人。』後來白雲端和尚拈云：『二尊宿各有一處打得著，且道那箇在前、那箇在後？』」師召大眾云：「白雲端和尚錯下名言。殊不知，二尊宿前不至村、後不迭店，直至于今翻成話霸。何故？字經三寫，烏焉成馬。」下座。

He also cited: "Sansheng said, 'Whenever I meet someone, I come out; having come out, it is not for their sake.' Xinghua said, 'Whenever I meet someone, I do not come out; having come out, it is immediately for their sake.' Later, Venerable Baiyun Duan brought this up and said, 'Each of the two venerable elders has a point where he strikes home. Tell me, which one is in front, and which one is behind?'" The Master addressed the assembly, saying: "Venerable Baiyun Duan misapplied fine phrases. Little does he know that the two venerable elders neither reached the village in front nor made it to the inn behind, so that right down to the present day it has turned into a contentious debate. Why so? 'A text copied three times turns *wu* and *yan* into *ma*.'" He descended from the seat.
