上堂，舉：「僧問趙州：『如何是毘盧頂相？』州云：『老僧自小出家，不曾眼花。』」應庵和尚拈云：「大小趙州語上偏枯，若有問天童：『如何是毘盧頂相？』只對他道：『大底大，小底小。』」師云：「若向趙州語下見得，坐殺天下衲僧；若向天童語下見得，走殺天下衲僧。忽有問華藏：『如何是毘盧頂相？』只對他道：『碌磚。』」

Ascending the hall, he brought up [the following]: “A monk asked Zhaozhou, ‘What is the uṣṇīṣa of Vairocana?’ Zhaozhou said, ‘Since youth I left home, and my eyes have never been dim.’ Venerable Ying'an took this up and said, ‘Big and small Zhaozhou was lopsided in his words. If someone were to ask Tiantong, “What is the uṣṇīṣa of Vairocana?” I would simply tell him, “The big are big, the small are small.”’” The Master said, “If you see it under Zhaozhou’s words, you sit to death all patchrobed monks under heaven. If you see it under Tiantong’s words, you run to death all patchrobed monks under heaven. If someone suddenly asks Huazang, ‘What is the uṣṇīṣa of Vairocana?’ I will simply tell him: ‘A paving brick.’”
