Ascending the hall: “‘Two comes from one; do not hold even to the one.’ When not a single thought arises, an ulcer grows on the left elbow. Great Master Bodhidharma facing the wall for nine years could not peer through it; the yellow-faced old fellow in over three hundred assemblies could not speak it; Deshan and Linji clenched their teeth tightly, a total embarrassment. How does Huazang speak a phrase that takes you by the hand when arriving here? The wind is warm, bird songs are broken; / The sun is high, flower shadows are dense.”
