Ascending the hall, he cited: "Venerable Cha of Tong'an asked a monk, 'Where have you come from?' The monk said, 'I have come from Mount Wutai.' Cha said, 'Did you see Mañjuśrī?' The monk spread out both hands. Cha said, 'Spreading your hands is easy enough, but who has seen Mañjuśrī?' The monk said, 'It is vexing enough to kill someone!' Cha said, 'If one does not see the wild geese amidst the clouds, how can one know the coldness of the desert frontiers?' The monk said, 'Having hurried from afar to your abbot's room, I beg the master for a single word.' Cha said, 'Under the gate of Sun Bin, talk of divining by drilling tortoise shells is in vain.' The monk said, 'Your reputation is not falsely spread.' Cha said, 'Go drink tea.' The monk then took his leave. Cha said, 'Although you gained a round of glory, you had both feet amputated.'" The Master said: "Fist comes and fist responds; kick comes and kick responds. Fist and kick clash and mingle—who loses and who wins? Shaking head and wagging tail, passing through the iron barrier; who is willing to believe the words about amputating the feet? Even so, there is an error in one place. Everyone, try to examine and see."
