Ascending the hall for the summer retreat, [the Master] said, "On the fourteenth and fifteenth, rules and standards are established. On the sixteenth and seventeenth, there is neither obstinacy nor necessity. Taking great perfect enlightenment as our monastery, body and mind abide peacefully in the wisdom of equality. The yellow-faced old fellow two thousand years ago left behind a gong'an that down to the present day is not off by a single hair. Lingyin moves it to the fourteenth day to deploy and explain to people. Do you still see? Do you still hear?"
Suddenly picking up his staff and tapping it once, he said:
"This very seeing and hearing is not seeing and hearing;
No further sound or form can be presented to you, sir.
If within this one realizes there has never been anything the matter,
What harm is there whether substance and function are distinguished or not?"
Giving a shout, he descended from the seat.
