Ascending the hall, a monk asked, "'Being with phrases and being without phrases is like a vine leaning on a tree; when the tree falls and the vine withers, where do the phrases return?'" The master held up his whisk and said, "Do you still see?" [The monk] advanced and said, "The sparrow-hawk has passed Silla." The master said, "Better to make prostrations." The master then said, "'Being with phrases and being without phrases is like a vine leaning on a tree'—stones crack, cliffs collapse, and a poisonous snake blocks the road. 'When the tree falls and the vine withers'—sīlī-surū! Guishan laughed ha-ha, caught red-handed with the loot! And how do you speak a phrase about water not washing water? August Heaven has no favorites; it assists only the virtuous."
