退院上堂，舉：「高亭隔江見德山，便乃橫趨而去，後來開法，承嗣德山。」師云：「高亭只見錐頭利，不見鑿頭方，當時若過江來，豈止住院？有人會得主丈子，兩手分付。不然，雲在嶺頭閑不徹，水流磵底太忙生。」

Ascending the hall upon retiring from the monastery, he cited: "Gaoting saw Deshan across the river, and immediately walked off sideways. Later he opened his Dharma teachings and succeeded Deshan." The Master said: "Gaoting only saw the sharpness of the awl's point, not the squareness of the chisel's head. If he had crossed the river at that time, would he have merely resided in a monastery? If someone understands the staff, with both hands I entrust it to him. If not, 'Clouds on the mountain ridge cannot finish idling; water flowing in the valley bottom is far too busy.'"
