上堂，舉：「長髭廊下見僧問訊，髭云：『步步是汝證明處，還知麼？』僧云：『不知。』髭云：『賴汝不知，若知，我堪作甚麼？』僧便禮拜。」師云：「長髭垂釣綆短，不搆深泉；者僧放乖，好與連腮一掌。作家分上，鳳林吒之。」

Ascending the hall, he cited: "Changzi saw a monk greeting him under the veranda. Zi said, 'Step by step is your place of realization; do you know it?' The monk said, 'I do not know.' Zi said, 'Fortunately you do not know; if you knew, what would I be good for?' The monk then bowed." The Master said, "Changzi let down a fishing line with a short rope, not reaching the deep spring. This monk was exceedingly sly; he deserved a slap across both cheeks. From the standpoint of an adept, Fenglin would scold him."
