上堂，舉：「雲門因僧問：『初秋夏末前程，忽有人問，未審對他道甚麼？』門云：『大眾退後。』僧云：『過在甚麼處？』門云：『還我九十日飯錢來。』」師云：「者僧是王，小波草鞋，雲門雖縱奪可觀，未免暗中著箭。」

Ascending the hall, he cited: "Yunmen was asked by a monk, 'At the beginning of autumn and the end of summer, if someone suddenly asks about the road ahead, I wonder what you would say to him?' Men said, 'Assembly, step back.' The monk said, 'Where is the fault?' Men said, 'Give me back the rice money for the ninety days!'" The Master said, "This monk was an inferior straw sandal; although Yunmen's letting go and taking away were impressive, he could not avoid being hit by an arrow in the dark."
