Ascending the hall, he cited: "When Linji, on the occasion of Zhaozhou touring the mountain, saw him washing his feet at the rear frame of the monastery, Linji thereupon asked, 'What is the meaning of the ancestral master coming from the west?' Zhaozhou said, 'It just so happens that this old monk is washing his feet.' Linji stepped forward in a posture of listening. Zhaozhou said, 'If you understand, then understand right away; what are you pecking and chewing at?' Linji thereupon returned to the abbot's quarters. Zhaozhou said, 'Thirty years of itinerant pilgrimage, and today I have mistakenly made an exposition for someone.'"
The master said, "One who seizes gold sees no people; one who chases a deer sees no mountain."
