上堂，舉：「溈山問仰山：『寂子心識微細流注，無來得幾年。』仰山不敢答，却云：『和尚無來幾年矣？』溈云：『老僧無來已七年。』溈山又問：『寂子如何？』仰云：『慧寂正鬧。』」師云：「古人及盡玄微，猶恐走作；今人只管孟八郎道，總是五逆人聞雷。」

Ascending the hall, he cited: "Guishan asked Yangshan, 'Jizi, for how many years has the subtle flow of your mental consciousness been absent?' Yangshan did not dare answer, but asked back, 'For how many years has the upādhyāya had it absent?' Guishan said, 'For this old monk it has been absent for seven years already.' Guishan asked again, 'How about you, Jizi?' Yangshan said, 'Huiji is right in the midst of turmoil.'"
The master said, "The ancients reached the utmost mystic subtlety, yet still feared slipping away; modern people merely indulge in reckless chatter, all resembling the five-rebellious offenders hearing thunder."
